Photography

I took a break from my usual painting practice and decided to dive into photography instead. It felt like a good way to gain a deeper understanding of my interests and spark some inspiration for future projects. I mostly use my phone camera for these shots because it gives me a sense of control that I don't quite get with traditional cameras.

I find that when moments are open and immersive, as in the moments in 'Freezing My View', we can embrace the feeling of calm and not feel tied down to the conformities of our behavioural expectations. In these moments, we can be as loud as we desire, which allows us to unveil the mask we keep on in spaces we are expected to. Your voices can go beyond any four walls and beyond the ears that refuse to listen to the incredibly powerful nature of what our words hold.

I find that these moments never come when they are planned; we stumble upon them, then hold them close until we find one again. This is precisely what happened in this moment, which was endlessly developing and unfolding, making me appreciate how rare these moments are, which usually come along by themselves, but had happened instantly twice. Using my phone camera builds on the fact that these things are planned, but we can use what we have to capture something that we wish to hold close.

I really enjoyed the editing process and looking back at my images afterwards. It allows me to highlight certain elements I find interesting and make the colours pop, helping me present my ideas more clearly. This experience has developed my interest and understanding of landscapes, movement, and how light interacts with different spaces and objects, such as clouds.

I have always utilised photography as a tool, as a way for me to gather reference images for my paintings and explore new perspectives. I wanted to expand this beyond a tool to a way of solidifying a moment that cannot be justified in recreation through paintings or drawing, but only in its raw form.
