Mental health

In 2023, I began a journey into understanding mental health, specifically focusing on the challenges many face with anxiety and memory repression. Through this exploration, I utilise expressive mark-making techniques, along with the creation of drawings and acrylic paintings, which often result in blurred outcomes. This approach reflects the complexity and nuance of these struggles, providing a visual representation of the emotional landscape associated with mental health issues.

I wanted to explore the idea of disconnection from oneself or the surroundings, often called derealisation and depersonalisation. This experience can make someone feel as if they are not in their own body, almost like they are observing themselves from a third-person perspective. For my piece, I envisioned a figure that appears unfocused and blurred, reflecting a sense of zoning out. Additionally, I included an impression of a second face to represent the figure's detachment from their body. In creating this work, I drew inspiration from German Expressionism.
